Non-verbal... Non-issue
Working with special needs families
everyone deserves CAPTURED memories
I hear it quite often..."We don't get family photos because my child is autistic" or "We were turned down by photographers because my child has special needs". These statements hurt my heart. Here is where my history fits in so well. I started working in childcare in high school. For 15 years I worked with children and mainly with 1 year olds. Now your average 1 year old is just learning how to communicate. BUT you, as a parent, can read your childs body language and facial expressions and know exactly what they are saying without words. I work the same way... And probably because I am a bit on the spectrum myself. Without going into crazy details, I can tell you that part of how my brain works causes me to pay close attention to peoples body language and facial expressions. It's really a superpower in my opinion. I can read people like a book! And I have plenty of testimony from clients and parents over the years of how I can communicate with their children without a single word. That's why I hate the term "Non-verbal". Spoken words are NOT the only form of communication!
That's why when you book your session with me there is a questionnaire to fill out. It asks if your child has special needs but also what makes them happy. Whatever it is, I'll do it! I have equipment that will attach my phone to the top of the camera to play their favorite song or video so they look right at the camera. I'll play catch, peekaboo, roll around on the ground... whatever it takes. Why? Because well... im still pretty much a child myself. And sessions should be a fun thing anyways. So please, don't be discouraged! And I hope that if you're searching for "The Best Photographer for special needs children" in the Bartlett, Millington, Arlington, or Memphis area that you find me. Im THAT LBphotography who is the best photographer for you and your family!
